The Wall Drill
The cure for early extension and coming "over the top".
The Flaw It Fixes
Early extension occurs when your hips move toward the golf ball during the downswing. This crowds your arms, forces you to stand up to make room, and usually results in flipped hands, blocks, or hooks.
How To Do It
- Setup: Stand with your back facing a wall, about 3-4 inches away. Take your normal golf posture without a club (cross arms across chest).
- Backswing: As you turn to the top of your swing, your trail butt cheek should touch and slide against the wall.
- Transition: As you start the downswing, your goal is to transition the pressure so your lead butt cheek hits the wall, while the trail cheek stays on it as long as possible.
- Follow Through: By impact, your lead butt cheek should be firmly pressed against the wall, clearing space for your arms to swing through.
Common Mistake
If you "come off the wall" during the downswing, you are early extending. If you hit the wall with your head or shoulders, you are losing posture.
